August 2023 to October 2024
The Department of Transport and Planning, and Yarra Trams are revitalising Melbourne’s tram network to meet the city’s future transport needs and increased demands on the tram network.
Melbourne is growing and we are adding more capacity to our tram network to provide more services and reliability for passengers. To support the increase in capacity, we are building a new extension on the existing substation site at 2 Daly Street, South Yarra.
Work on the South Yarra substation commenced in August 2023. Construction is underway with the first stage already completed. While our crews are completing works on stage two, unexpected delays will mean that stage two and three works will be completed later than scheduled.
The extension of the substation will take just over a year and will be completed in three stages by September 2024.
The three stages will involve:
- Early service installation and site mobilisation – August to October 2023. Complete
- Construction of new substation extension and installation of equipment – October 2023 to October 2024. Complete
- Testing and commissioning – October 2024. Complete
Most of the work will occur:
- 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
- 7am to 3pm, Saturday.
Yarra Trams will provide community updates throughout construction as the work progresses.
Upcoming works event
As part of our works to construct the new substation extension, we will undertake eight days of works from 9pm, Sunday 29 September to 5am, Monday 7 October 2024 (24-hour works).
Works will take place within the South Yarra substation at 2 Daly Street, South Yarra.
24-hour works will include:
- Disconnecting the incoming power.
- Modifying the existing equipment within the substation.
- Installing and commissioning new equipment within the substation.
- Mostly low-to-medium levels of noise during the works.
There will be no traffic impact for vehicles on Daly Street, South Yarra.
There will be service changes to tram routes 58 and 78 on Toorak Road and Chapel Street during the works. For more information, closer to the time of works, visit: yarratrams.com.au/servicechanges
Businesses located around the works area will be open and accessible during the works. Please continue to support local businesses during these essential tram works.
Footpaths will be open. Temporary detours may be in place. Please follow signage around works and be aware of increased vehicle traffic in the area.
