Discover surprising connections between extraordinary people, events and icons from Victoria’s history. Follow your own path of exploration on a trail of unexpected, intertwined stories.

Velvet, Iron, Ashes, the new interactive exhibition at State Library Victoria, opens up a new way of seeing our history and reveals as never before how our stories intersect. Uncover unexpected links between some of the state’s most important stories including Ned Kelly, the Ashes Urn, Yallourn Power Station and even Nappie Wash. Use their retro-style Map-o-matic interactive to print out a map creating your own personalised tour of the exhibition.

Showcasing more than 200 treasures from the Library’s collection and from other major institutions and private collections, this captivating exhibition will inspire you to make discoveries of your own.

Velvet, Iron, Ashes is open 10am-6pm daily. Entry is free.

How to get there

Ten tram routes take you directly to the State Library Victoria, to both Swanston Street and La Trobe Street entrances.

Route 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 trams all take you directly to Stop 8 Melbourne Central Station which is located near Swanston Street entrances for State Library Victoria.

Route 30 and Route 35 City Circle trams take you directly to Stop 7 Russell Street at the La Trobe Street entrance closest to the Victoria Gallery where Velvet, Iron, Ashes is housed.

Remember to have your myki ready before you board, take a seat and sit tight.  If standing, grab a handle, pole or strap and grip right, as we take you to a surprising journey of discovery!
