Victoria and Elizabeth streets Precinct Upgrade

We’re making the tram and road network safer and more reliable and getting it ready to meet future needs. These important maintenance works will upgrade the Swanston, Victoria and Elizabeth streets precinct.

These works will be completed in stages:  

Early works

Night works – 9pm to 5am, Sunday 24 August to Friday 12 September 2025 (Sunday to Thursday nights only).

Where?

• Victoria Street – From Bouverie Street to Peel Street, Melbourne.
• Elizabeth Street – From Therry Street to Queensberry Street, Melbourne (intersection included).

Major works

24-hour works – From 8pm, Monday 6 October to 4.30am, Monday 27 October 2025

Where?

• Victoria Street – From Bouverie Street to Peel Street.
• Elizabeth Street – From Therry Street to Queensberry Street.

Early works – What to expect?

• Night works.
• Medium levels of noise at night.
• Vehicles, trucks, machinery, and contractors on site.

Road and Parking

• Nightly road, lane, parking and bike lane closures on Victoria and Elizabeth streets, as required.
• Works will move along Victoria and Elizabeth streets as the investigations progress.
• Nightly closure of the intersections along Victoria, Elizabeth and Queensberry streets, as required.
• Mostly low to medium levels of noise. Some periods of high levels of noise during the service investigation works.
• Vehicles, trucks, machinery and contractors on site.
• Access to properties will not be affected by the works.
• Footpaths will remain open, temporary detours may be in place at some times.
• Traffic management and signage will direct traffic. Please follow signage around works.

Major works – What to expect?

• 24-hour works.
• Full road closure of the Elizabeth Street and Victoria Street intersection.
• Full kerb to kerb road closure and fencing.
• Extremely high levels of noise.
• Detours for bike riders, pedestrians and traffic.

Road and Parking

Victoria Street will be closed from Bouverie Street to Peel Street.

• Intersection of Bouverie and Victoria streets will be open.
• Intersections of Victoria, Cobden and O’Connell streets will be closed
• Intersection of Leicester and Victoria streets will be closed.
• Intersection of Victoria and Elizabeth streets will be closed.
• Intersection of Victoria and Peel streets will be open.

Elizabeth Street will be closed between Therry and Queensberry streets.

• Intersection of Elizabeth and Queensberry streets will be open. There will be some night closures of the intersection of Elizabeth and Queensberry streets to install underground conduits. The dates and times will be confirmed closer to works.
• Inner lanes between Elizabeth Street and Haymarket roundabout will be closed, service lane will remain open.
• Intersection of Therry and Elizabeth streets will be open.
• Access for emergency services will be maintained as required.

Public Transport

Tram routes 19, 57 and 59 along Elizabeth Street will be impacted. Closer to the time of works, visit: yarratrams.com.au/service-changes

Pedestrians

Footpaths will remain open around the works area. There may be temporary footpath closures where we are upgrading the footpaths. Temporary detours may be in place. Please follow the signage around the works.
