Reservoir substation

The Department of Transport and Planning and Yarra Trams are finalising the new substation at 816 Plenty Road, Reservoir, replacing the existing substation at this location. This will upgrade the tram power supply system to ensure enough power to meet future transport needs and the increased demands on the tram network.

Works on the Reservoir substation commenced in August 2023 and the first two stages of the works have been completed. While our crews are continuing works, please see below for updated completion dates.

The construction of this substation has unfolded in four stages:
1. Early service installation and site mobilisation – August 2023. Complete
2. Construction of new substation and installation of equipment – August 2023 to June 2024. Complete
3. Testing and commissioning – Scheduled from April to June 2024. Updated – new scheduled completion date is October 2024.
4. Demolition of existing substation. Updated – new scheduled completion date is December 2024 to January 2025.

Most of the remaining work will occur:

• 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
• 7am to 3pm, Saturday.

Yarra Trams will provide further updates throughout construction as the work progresses.
