Montague Street Bridge

The Department of Transport and Planning and Yarra Trams regularly carry out maintenance works across the network to improve safety, operations and passenger experience.

We are replacing the northern crash protection beam at the Montague Street Bridge.

Where?

Works will happen on Montague Street Bridge, between Normanby Road and Gladstone Street, South Melbourne.

When?

Works will take place:

Night works
8pm to 5am, Sunday 10 August to 5am, Thursday 21 August 2025

Day works
5am to 8pm, Monday 11 August to Saturday 16 August 2025

What is happening?

  • Setting up work areas, including site sheds.
  • Removing the northern crash beam and replacing it with a new one.
  • Strengthening the concrete pillars supporting the crash beam.
  • Routine bridge maintenance works.
  • Reinstating the work area.

What to expect?

  • Vehicles, machinery, mobile cranes and contractors on site.
  • Mostly low to medium levels of noise. Some short periods of high levels of noise.

Montague Street will be closed in both directions to all traffic, between Normanby Road and Gladstone Street from 8pm to 5am, Sunday 10 August to 5am, Thursday 21 August 2025.

Montague Street partial lane closures (slow lanes closed) between Normanby Road and Buckhurst Street from 5am to 8pm, Monday 11 August to Saturday 16 August 2025.

  • Traffic detours will be in place. Please follow signage and VMS for guidance.
  • Traffic management will be in place to safely manage vehicles through during day-time partial lane closures.
  • Footpaths will remain open, with reduction to width due to works. Some detours in place as required for safety.

Tram services on the light rail bridge will not be impacted.
