Flinders Street and St Kilda Road Tram Infrastructure Upgrades

April - May 2026

We’re completing critical works to replace ageing tram tracks on Flinders and Swanston streets near Flinders Street Station and along sections of St Kilda Road. 

These tram renewal works will help to make our tram and road network safer, more reliable and prepared to meet future needs. 

During this time the Flinders and Swanston Street intersection and St Kilda Road, between Princes Bridge and Southbank Boulevard, will be closed in stages. 

Works will take place in stages: 

Early works 

Date: 

  • 8pm to 5am, Monday 13 April to Friday 24 April (excluding Friday and Saturday nights).

What’s happening:  

  • Setting up the works area and service identification. 

Impacts 

  • Full road closure of Flinders and Swanston Street intersection. 
  • Full Road closure of the centre lanes of St Kilda Road, between Princes Bridge and Southbank Boulevard. 
  • Service lanes will remain open.  
  • Tram services will not be impacted. 
  • Businesses will remain open. 

Public transport 

No changes to tram routes along Flinders Street and St Kilda Road. 

Pedestrians 

Footpaths will be open. Temporary detours may be in place. Please follow signage around the works. 

Major works: 

Dates: 

  • Stage 1: 8pm, Friday 8 May to 5am, Thursday 14 May 
  • Stage 2: 8pm, Friday 8 May to 4.30am, Monday 18 May  

What’s happening: 

  • Replacing tram tracks at the Flinders Street and Swanston Street intersection and on St Kilda Road 
  • Installing new poles and overhead wires 

Impacts 

  • 24-hour works. 
  • Extremely high noise levels for the first week of the works. 
  • Changed traffic conditions, including road closures along Flinders and 
  • Swanston streets and St Kilda Road. 
  • Changes to all tram routes along Flinders Street and St Kilda Road. 
  • Businesses will remain open. 

Public transport 

During stage 1 of the works, there will be service changes to all tram routes along 

Flinders Street and St Kilda Road. During stage 2 tram services along Flinders will run as normal. St Kilda Road services remain disrupted.

Pedestrians: 

Footpaths will remain open around the works area. There may be temporary footpath closures where we are upgrading the footpaths. Temporary detours may be in place. Please follow the signage around the works.

Businesses located around the area will remain open during all stages of our works. 

Please continue to support your local businesses. Pedestrian access will always remain open.
