Burwood Highway Tram Track Upgrade and Maintenance

Yarra Trams and the Department of Transport and Planning regularly carry out maintenance and renewal works across the network to improve operations and passenger experience. We will soon be completing track maintenance and renewal works in the tram reserve on Burwood Highway between Warrigal Road and Vermont South Terminus, Burwood East.

Works will also involve installing reinforced track foundations at the site access of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) site at Burwood between Elgar Road and Holland Avenue.

When

1.30am, Monday 19 May to 4am, Wednesday 28 May 2025 (24-hour works).

  • Along Burwood Highway within the tram reserve between Warrigal Road and Vermont South Terminus.

What’s happening

  • Setting up work areas including traffic management.

Track Renewal and SRL site at Burwood access road modifications:

  • Excavating old and installing new tram tracks.
  • Removal of exiting tram crossover and replacing with straight tracks near Somers Street.
  • Installation of reinforced foundations at the SRL site access.

Track Maintenance:

  • Repair to tracks involving welding, grinding, replacing drainage lids and replacing small sections of track.

Overhead Maintenance:

  • Span and trolley wire works and maintenance.
  • Weight wheel adjustment.

What to expect

  • 24-hour works.
  • Vehicle, machinery and contractors on site.
  • Lane closure adjacent to the work zones with appropriate traffic controls in place.
  • Medium to high levels of noise.
  • Temporary reduced speed limits around the work site.
  • Traffic management and signage will direct traffic.
  • Intersections of Elgar Road and Somers Street, across the tram tracks, will be closed during construction and reopened as soon as works in this section are completed. Detours will be in place.
  • Footpaths will be open. Temporary detours may be in place. Please follow signage around works. The on going closure of the westbound pedestrian footpath between McComas Grove and McIntyre Street will continue to be in place.
  • Businesses will remain open.
  • Access to properties will not be impacted by the works.

Public transport

There will be service changes to tram Route 75 from first tram, Monday 19 May to last tram Tuesday 27 May 2025.

Buses will replace trams during these times:

  • Towards Vermont South, between Stop 39 Camberwell Depot and Vermont South terminus.
  • Towards City, between Vermont South terminus and Stop 38 Hastings Street.
