Bourke and Spencer streets Tram Infrastructure Upgrades

We’re making safety upgrades and renewing tram infrastructure along Bourke and Spencer streets to make the tram and road network safer, more reliable and ready to meet future needs.
Sections of tram track in these areas are approaching the end of their useful life and will be replaced to maintain a safe and dependable service. We’ll also upgrade tram poles and powerlines as part of this renewal.
Early works: Service investigation works: 10pm to 5am, Sunday 25 January to Monday 16 February 2026 (Sunday to Thursday nights only).
Early works activities include
- Setting up the work area, including traffic management.
- Identifying underground services.
Impacts
- Traffic, intersection and parking closures as required.
- Mostly low to medium levels of noise. Some periods of high levels of noise during the service investigation works.
- Access to properties will not be affected by the works.
- Footpaths will remain open, temporary detours may be in place at some times.
- Traffic management and signage will direct traffic. Please follow signage around works.
- On street parking may be restricted at some times for safety.
Major works: 24-hour major works will start from 1am, Monday 16 February to 5am, Thursday 26 February 2026.
Major works activities include
- Replacing tram tracks and road surface in sections on Bourke and Spencer streets.
- Installing new poles and overhead wires.
Impacts
- Extremely high noise levels for the first week of the works.
- Bourke Street will be closed between King and Spencer streets.
- Spencer Street will be closed between Little Bourke and Little Collins streets.
- The intersection of Bourke and Spencer streets will be closed.
- Little Bourke and Little Collins streets will remain open to all east west traffic.
- Footpaths will remain open, temporary detours may be in place at some times.
- Traffic management and signage will direct traffic. Please follow signage around works.
Emergency services will have access at all times during the works.
Public transport
Tram routes 86 and 96 along Bourke Street will be impacted. For more information closer to time of works, visit: yarratrams.com.au/service-changes
Pedestrians:
Footpaths will remain open around the works area. There may be temporary footpath closures where we are upgrading the footpaths. Temporary detours may be in place. Please follow the signage around the works.
