Yarra Journey Makers (YJM), a joint venture between Transdev and John Holland, has officially taken over the operation of Melbourne’s iconic 250-kilometre tram network, Yarra Trams. This transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for Melbourne’s iconic tram network, bringing a fresh approach to delivering safe, sustainable, and reliable public transport for the city.

YJM was selected as the new operator following a competitive tender process, chosen for its expertise in transport, infrastructure, and urban mobility. The joint venture is committed to delivering a world-class tram service while improving performance, safety, and sustainability for all passengers.

YJM CEO Vincent Destot said YJM would work closely with the Department of Transport and Planning to ensure Melbourne’s trams continued to operate smoothly to help keep the city moving.

“We are excited to take on the responsibility of managing the world’s largest tram network,” Mr Destot said.

“Our goal is to deliver a world-class service for the people of Melbourne, while investing in sustainable practices and innovative solutions that will future-proof our tram system.

“Our dedicated staff, from drivers to maintenance teams, are at the heart of this mission, and we’re committed to working together as we enhance our network.”

A New Chapter for Melbourne’s Trams

Transdev Australia and New Zealand CEO Brian Brennan said he was excited for the opportunities ahead.

“Yarra Journey Makers is honoured to officially take responsibility for running Yarra Trams. We are focused on delivering a more integrated and sustainable tram service, in line with the Department of Transport and Planning’s vision for public transport,” Mr Brennan said.

“Our partnership will prioritise performance and the passenger experience — helping Melburnians move more easily with better reliability and real-time information when they need it.”

John Holland’s Executive General Manager – Rail and Transport, Steve Butcher, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the expertise the team brings to the network.

“Now that Yarra Journey Makers is in place, we’re excited to deliver a reliable tram service for this vibrant, growing city. We are committed to continuous improvements, from operating the fleet of Next Generation Trams to upgrading depot infrastructure, all while providing an inclusive and diverse workplace,” Mr Butcher said.

Seamless Transition for Passengers

YJM has worked closely with the Department of Transport and Planning and Yarra Trams teams to ensure a seamless transition, with no disruption to services during the handover.

Operations will remain unchanged, including how customers interact or access metropolitan tram services with YJM working towards new targets and incentives throughout the life of the franchise to ensure the future needs of Melburnians and its visitors are met. Importantly, the familiar faces that Melburnians know and trust – tram drivers, frontline staff, and maintenance crews – remain the backbone of the service, ensuring customers can enjoy continuity in their tram journey.

Both Transdev and John Holland bring significant experience operating transport systems globally, including 20 light rail networks worldwide. With YJM now at the helm, the team is well-equipped to meet the demands of Melbourne’s growing population while improving the daily commute for millions of passengers.

Melburnians will start to see changes across the tram network, including new uniforms and upgrades to service information, as YJM begins its mission to deliver an even better public transport experience for all.
