Update on removal of Metcard ticketing equipment from trams

Friday 19 April 2013

Yarra Trams, on behalf of Public Transport Victoria, has commenced the removal of all Metcard ticketing equipment from Melbourne's tram fleet.

In order to prevent disruption to passenger services, the de-installation program will take place progressively until July 2013 with approximately 6 trams per day transformed.

Passengers will notice the following changes:

  • Removal of Metcard ticket machines and replacing with additional seats (either regular seats or 'bum-rests' depending on the type of tram)
  • Removal of the blue metal barrier next to some ticket machines, replaced with additional hold rail for passengers
  • Removal of Metcard validators
  • Installation of additional myki card readers on all trams
  • Addition of extra safety barriers where required
