Swan Street tram tracks set for replacement
Thursday 8 May 2014
Note: The works are continuing on the morning of Monday 12 May. More details.
Tram tracks that are more than 50 years old are being upgraded in Richmond as part of an important infrastructure project delivered by Yarra Trams on behalf of Public Transport Victoria.
Work to replace approximately 360 metres of track on Swan Street, between Punt Road and Dando Street, will start in the early hours of Saturday 10 May and continue 24 hours a day until 5am on Monday 12 May.
To minimise disruption to tram and road users, the track renewal coincides with essential drainage repairs by City of Yarra in the same section of Swan Street.
Passengers will benefit from improved ride comfort, while passengers, local residents and traders will benefit from reduced noise associated with tram operations.
Tram service changes and road closures
The following service changes will apply on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May:
Route 70 trams will operate as Route 70a diverting via Bridge Road between Stop 29 Riversdale Junction and Stop 7 Exhibition Street.
A Route 70 bus replacement service will also operate from Stop 28 Wattle Rd & Power St to Richmond Town Hall on Bridge Road.
During this time Route 48, 70 and 75 trams and replacement buses will operate to the normal service frequency. However, traffic delays around the work zone and at tram/bus interchanges may mean services don't arrive at the scheduled time.
Shuttle trams will run between the city and Stop 7E Punt Road & Swan Street on Saturday 10 May to help crowds get to and from the Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs game at the MCG and the Melbourne Storm vs Manly game at AAMI Park.
Swan Street will be closed to through traffic from Punt Road to Dando Street from approximately 1am on Saturday 10 May until 5am on Monday 12 May.
Motorists will be diverted around the work zone via Punt Road, Bridge Road and Church Street and traffic controllers on site will manage access for local residents and traders.
The project is dependent on dry weather conditions and may be extended by 24 hours if there is heavy rain on the weekend.
