St Kilda Road track maintenance

As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria (PTV) are renewing tram tracks on St Kilda Road between Louise Street and Beatrice Street and on Commercial Road between St Kilda Road and Alfred Lane.

Tram overhead infrastructure will be renewed on Commercial Road between St Kilda Road and Toorak Road. Track maintenance will take place on Commercial Road between Punt Road and Chapel Street. The tracks at this location are up to 40 years old and require replacing to ensure we maintain a safe and reliable tram network.

The project will deliver:

  • Improved safety for everyone
  • A better road surface for motorists, cyclists and tram passengers
  • Less tram noise by addressing existing potholes, broken rails and wheel squealing

Project timing

Preliminary work

In readiness for the four day work schedule beginning Friday 25 March 2016, we will be carrying out early preparation and pre-welding work.This work will commence on Sunday 20 March 2016 on the east side of St Kilda Road between Moubray Street and Commercial Road. Lane closures are required and some parking will be removed in this area to allow traffic through while the work takes place.

Major work 

Major work commences 1:30am Friday 25 March and continues 24 hours a day until 5am Tuesday 29 March 2016.

Tram passengers 

Routes 3a, 5, 16, 64, 67 & 72  will be affected during the tram upgrade work. Service changes apply from 1:30am Friday 25 March to 5am Tuesday 29 March 2016.  Buses will be replacing tram services for part of the journey.

Motorists

Full road closures will be in place on Commercial Road between St Kilda Road and Alfred Lane during the track renewal work. Lane closures will be in place along St Kilda Road between Louise Street Beatrice Street.

Full road closures will also be in place on Commercial Road between Punt Road and Chapel Street during the track maintenance work.

Residents

Residents living on or just off St Kilda Road or Commercial Road with no other vehicle access in or out of their properties will be provided with guided access by traffic controllers.

Please be aware that some delays may occur when accessing and leaving your property, and it is highly recommended that parking in side-streets be utilised to minimise disruption.

Delays could be up to an hour due to machinery in the vicinity. 

Pedestrians and businesses

Yarra Trams is working with City of Melbourne to minimise the impact of this work on local traders. In the interest of public safety, the work zone will be fenced off, however footpaths will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses along this section of St Kilda Road and Commercial Road. 

We thank you for your patience and we regret any inconvenience caused by this essential renewal work.

We advise that it is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).

Accordingly Yarra Trams will not be compensating third parties for any losses incurred during the conduct of the work.
