New level access platform stop on Wellington Parade at Jolimont Station/MCG
Friday 4 September 2015
As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria (PTV) will be constructing a new level access platform stop on Wellington Parade at Jolimont/MCG.
Consultation
Yarra Trams and PTV conducted community consultation during April and May 2015 to give businesses, residents and the general community an opportunity to learn more about the proposed stop and attend an information session. Interested parties were also given the opportunity to learn more or provide feedback by phone and email.
Following the consultation period, Yarra Trams submitted a detailed report to VicRoads and City of Melbourne for consideration. After a thorough review, VicRoads and City of Melbourne granted approval for Yarra Trams to construct the new level access platform stop on Wellington Parade at Jolimont/MCG.
Why is the new platform stop being constructed?
Wellington Parade is one of Melbourne's busiest tram corridors, with trams reaching a four minute frequency during peak periods. Wellington Parade tram stops are a vital transport link for 3000 passengers connecting from Jolimont Station to the eastern end of the CBD daily. It is also an important commuter hub for the thousands of passengers attending major events in the sporting and entertainment precinct.
The new tram stop will provide important upgrades for this section of the network and improve access for passengers, especially the elderly, vision and mobility impaired and people with prams.
Benefits
Benefits of the new stop will include:
- easier and safer access to trams
- increased protection from road traffic
- real-time passenger information
- improved passenger amenity including shelters, lighting and seating.
Changes to Wellington Parade
Yarra Trams will be combining stops 11 and 12 on Wellington Parade to form the new level access stop at the corner of Powlett Street. As a result, safety zone stops at Clarendon Street (stop 11) will be removed. This will mean a number of changes will occur on Wellington Parade including:
- Some existing parking and loading bays between Powlett and Clarendon streets will operate during the daytime. Allowances and restrictions include:
- Parking within a number of existing bays on the northern side of Wellington Parade will be allowed between 7am and 3pm Monday to Friday and from 6am to 12pm on weekends. No stopping restrictions will operate at all other times.
- Parking within a number of existing bays on the southern side of Wellington Parade will be allowed between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday and from 6am to 12pm on weekends. No stopping restrictions will operate at all other times.
- Parking changes will also be implemented in surrounding street sections to assist the needs of local residents, businesses and visitors.
- A new pedestrian crossing will be installed mid-block on Wellington Parade between Clarendon and Powlett streets.
Timing
Preliminary work will begin in early September. This work will prepare the site for the construction of the new level access platform stop. Major work will commence at 12:01am Saturday 10 October and continue until 5am Saturday 17 October. More details of what work will be taking place will be provided closer to the time of work.
Motorists, residents and traders
Full road closures will be in place on Wellington Parade between Powlett Street and Clarendon Street during major works. Traffic Controllers will provide local access to residents and traders, however major delays should be expected. More details will be available closer to the time of works.
Tram passengers
Route 48 and 75 trams will be affected during the construction of the new platform stop.
For details closer to the time, refer to signage on the network or on-board brochures.
Pedestrians
The work zone will be fenced off during construction for safety but footpaths will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses along Wellington Parade.
We thank you for your patience and regret any inconvenience caused by this essential network upgrade.
We advise that it is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).
Accordingly Yarra Trams will not be compensating third parties for any losses incurred during the conduct of the work.
