Installation of new safety kerbing on Collins Street - Monday 3 March to Friday 28 March

Monday 3 March 2014

As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria will be installing new curved safety kerbing along the tram tracks on Collins Street, between Spring and Spencer streets.

The work will take place on weeknights from approximately 10pm to 5am the next day from Monday 3 March to Friday 28 March 2014.

The new curved safety kerbing, 50mm high and 350mm wide, is designed to improve the safety and reliability of tram services by deterring cars from driving across the middle of the road into the pathway of trams.

The kerbing is similar to that seen on St Kilda Esplanade or Royal Parade.

Effect on the local community
Work crews will begin at the Spring Street end of Collins Street and move progressively towards Spencer Street as the new kerbing is installed.

The work needs to be conducted after hours and over a four week period, to minimise disruption and ensure the site reopens to trams at 5am each day. While we will make every effort to conduct the noisiest work between 10pm and 12 midnight, there may be a need to do some noisy work between 12 midnight and 5am to ensure the work is completed on time.

Associated noise from machinery, vehicles and work crews is unavoidable but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep this to a minimum. The use of reverse beepers and flashing lights is a safety requirement and these devices cannot be switched off.

Road closures
There will be a partial closure of Collins Street while these works take place. Some on-road parking may be affected.

Way-finding signage will be located around the work zone and traffic controllers will be on duty to provide assistance to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

There will be no impact on Collins Street tram services while these works take place.
