Forward thinking - Melbourne's tram map of the future

Thursday 19 September 2013

Melbourne's tram network has undergone significant changes since electrification began in 1906. Conversions from cable lines and extensions of existing routes eventually left us with the largest operational system in the world.

Most of the routes Yarra Trams operates today have grown piece-by-piece over more than a hundred years, but a 13-year-old student from Melbourne's eastern suburbs has created a map which radically reimagines what our network could look like in the future.

Lawrence based his future system on the current PTV network map, and his ideas include trams to Glen Waverley, Melbourne Airport, Oakleigh and South Morang - as well as connections to shopping centres at Chadstone, Doncaster, Essendon Fields, Forest Hill, Northland and Southland.
