Closure of Dandenong Rd & Hornby St median strip opening - 1 August 2015
Wednesday 24 June 2015
Improved safety
The u-turn opening in the median of Dandenong Road at Hornby Street, Windsor has been identified as having a very poor safety record and a high potential for tram-to-vehicle collisions.
As part of its commitment to the safety of passengers, motorists and staff, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria (PTV) will be implementing a temporary closure in anticipation of permanently closing the u-turn median opening on Dandenong Road at Hornby Street, Windsor.
This particular location has been identified and ranked across Melbourne's tram network within the top 12 of 64 'hot spots' assessed as a high safety risk.
Changes to Dandenong Rd
The median opening will be closed on 1 August 2015 in the interests of public safety for a number of reasons including:
- A u-turn alternative is located nearby 200 metres west at the signalised intersection of Chapel Street and Dandenong Road, where a u-turn is able to be performed safely and in a controlled environment
- All motorists using the median opening to perform u-turns are still able to reach their destination by using the safe and controlled alternative
- In the past five years 17 tram-to-vehicle collisions have occurred at this location despite being controlled by static and LED 'Give Way To Tram' traffic signage
- Closing the median opening eliminates the risk of further collisions and the compromise to passenger, motorist and staff safety
- Extensive research and traffic modelling commissioned by Yarra Trams shows that the impact on traffic movements and queue lengths for motorists making a u-turn at the Dandenong Road/Chapel Street intersection is minimal.
