Reason for service changes

We're building 3 new accessible platform stops along Nicholson Street on the Route 96

Post-works: from 5am Sunday 16 September

Following completion of the works, there are some changes to stop names, numbers and locations. 

Stop 11 Victoria Parade, Stop 14 Bell Street and Stop 13 Hanover Street have been removed. Three new platform stops have been built: 

  • Stop 11 Melbourne Museum
  • Stop 12 Moor Street  
  • Stop 13 Johnston Street

Pre-works

Monday 30 July to 31 August 2018, 7am to 5pm each day

Pre-welding works will be carried out on Nicholson Street, between Moor Street and Hanover Street. During this time, some changes to traffic may occur. Passengers for Stop 13 Hanover Street are urged to exercise caution and follow traffic signage around this stop.  

Monday 27 August to 31 August 2018

Some infrastructure changes will be carried out on Nicholson Street, between Victoria Parade and Elgin Street/Johnston Street. Stop shelters and some passenger information displays will be removed. Construction will commence on 31 August 2018. 

No service changes apply during this pre-works period.

Service changes - Friday 31 August to 5am Sunday 16 September

  • Route 86 trams run as Route 86a, with buses replacing trams between Stop 10 Parliament Station and Stop 25 Clifton Hill Interchange.
  • Route 96 trams run as Route 96a, with buses replacing trams between Stop 10 Parliament Station and East Brunswick, diverting around the work zone.

  • Stop 11 Victoria Parade to Stop 12 Melbourne Museum
  • Stop 23 Wellington Street to Stop 24 Michael Street

Route 96

  • Stop 11 Victoria Parade to Stop 16 Rose Street

Alternative travel options

  • Route 1 and 6 trams via Lygon Street
  • Route 11 trams via Brunswick Street 
  • South Morang and Hurstbridge trains between Clifton Hill and Parliament Stations
  • Upfield trains to connect with Route 6 trams away from the work zone
  • Bus 250 and 251 via Rathdowne Street to Melbourne Museum, Royal Exhibition Building and
    Carlton Gardens.

Pedestrian crossings and access

Access around the work zone will be limited.  If you need to access the area, plan your journey in advance and allow extra time.

The only crossing points through the work zone will be at:

  • Victoria Parade
  • Elgin Street/Johnston Street
  • Kay Street

Saturday 8 September until 5am Wednesday 12 September

The only crossing points through the work zone will be at:

  • Victoria Parade
  • Hanover Street (Elgin Street/Johnston Street closed)
  • Kay Street

5am Wednesday 12 September until 5am Saturday 16 September

The only crossing points through the work zone will be at:

  • Victoria Parade
  • Elgin Street/Johnston Street (Hanover Street closed)
  • Kay Street

Please note, the pedestrian crossing has moved from Faraday Street to Hanover Street from 12.01am Saturday 8 September until 5am Wednesday 12 September.

 

     
Key destinations and best alternatives from the City

Melbourne Museum, Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens:

  • take the Route 96 replacement bus from Parliament Station,
  • bus 250 or 251 from Lonsdale Street to Rathdowne Street, or
  • walk 500 metres or 7 minutes

St Vincent's Plaza and hospitals:

  • take the Route 11, 12 or 109 trams from Collins Street or Route 30 from La Trobe Street

Trams and replacement buses run to normal frequency, however they may not arrive at the scheduled time due to traffic congestion.
