Tram Stop Upgrade Toorak Road, South Yarra

11 June to 19 June 2021

We’re building a new level-access tram stop on Toorak Road as part of the South Yarra Station upgrade. We’re also upgrading the tram power supply near the intersection of Toorak Road and Chapel Street, South Yarra.

The upgrade includes

  • Building a level-access tram stop with shelters, modern amenities and features.
  • Installing a bike lane and bike parking hoops outside South Yarra Station.
  • Widening the pedestrian crossing and footpath.
  • Creating water-sensitive garden beds.
  • Upgrading the tram power supply.
  • Installing new overhead poles.

Night works: 9pm to 6am, Thursday 3 June to Thursday 10 June 2021

  What’s happening

  • Setting up work areas and traffic management.
  • Cutting holes in the concrete or asphalt in the footpath, road and tram way
  • Excavating to locate underground services.
  • Reinstating the work areas.

What to Expect

  • Night works.
  • Mostly low levels of noise during the night with some short periods of medium-to-high levels when concrete is cut or excavating takes place.
  • Local temporary lane, parking and footpath closures for short periods of time.
  • Vehicles, trucks, small machinery and contractors on site.
  • Some pedestrian detours in place as required.

Main Works

Platform works:
10pm, Friday 11 June to 5am, Saturday 19 June 2021 (24-hour works).

Power upgrade work:

Night works - 6pm to 5am, Wednesday 16 June to Friday 18 June 2021.
Stage one -  1am Wednesday 16 June to 9am Thursday 17 June 2021 (24-hour works).
Stage two -  1am Wednesday 16 June to 5am Friday 18 June 2021 (24-hour works).

What’s happening

  • Digging up the tracks and removing rubble.
  • Building a new level-access tram stop and shelters with modern amenities and features outside the South Yarra Station.
  • Widening the pedestrian crossing and footpath.
  • Trenching and installing power infrastructure within the tram tracks and roadways.
  • Reinstating the work areas.

What to expect

  • 24-hour works.
  • Temporary changes to local streets.
  • Toorak Road will be closed to traffic between Davis Avenue and Claremont Street 10pm Friday 11 June to 5am Saturday 19 June 2021.
  • Chapel Street will be closed from Almeida Crescent to and including the intersection of Toorak Road and Chapel Street from 1am Wednesday 16 June to 9am Thursday 17 June 2021.
  • Toorak Road will also be closed from the intersection of Chapel Street to Chambers Street (west) and River Street (east) from 1am Wednesday 16 June to 5am Friday 18 June 2021.
  • Detours for public transport passengers, cyclists, and traffic.
  • High levels of noise during the day and evening until 10pm e.g. concrete, asphalt and steel cutting.
    Medium levels of noise at night e.g. delivery of rail.

Closeout works

Once the major works are complete, we will need to do some close out works. This work will include finishing works on the new tram stop as well as installing power cables in the newly installed conduits.

Construction during COVID

To ensure the safety of all workers and the community, all construction and maintenance work undertaken will operate under a High Risk COVID Safe plan.
