High Street tram track renewal

9 - 27 October 2019

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) in partnership with Yarra Trams will commence work to renew tram tracks, poles and overhead wiring on High Street between St Kilda Road, Melbourne and Newry Street, Windsor.

Preliminary works

Preliminary works such as pre-welding of new tram tracks will take place between Wednesday 9 October and Sunday 13 October 2019. Please refer to the attached map for the exact location of this work.

This work will take place in the week leading up to major works and will be carried out during the day and at night if required. Completing welding before the closure reduces the overall timeframe required to complete the major works.

Noise will be mostly contained to the day time hours but there may be a requirement for some periods of noisy work at night.

Major works

Major works will involve the replacement of tram tracks, poles and overhead wiring at the following locations:

High Street between Newry Street, Windsor and Chapel Street, Prahran (Stage 1): between 8pm Sunday 13 October and 5am Wednesday 23 October 2019.

High Street between Chapel Street, Prahran and Punt Road, Prahran (Stage 2): between 8pm Sunday 13 October and 5am Sunday 27 October 2019.

High Street at Punt Road, Prahran (Stage 2a): between 5am Saturday 19 October and 5am Monday 21 October 2019.

High Street between Punt Road, Prahran and St Kilda Road, Melbourne (Stage 3): between 10pm Wednesday 16 October and 5am Sunday 27 October 2019.

Public transport changes

During the major works, tram route 6 will be affected. There will be tram replacement buses to help passengers get to their destinations.

Pedestrians

The work zone will be fenced off for safety, however footpaths will remain open around the work area to allow pedestrian access to businesses and residences located around the work zone.

Please note that there will be kerb to kerb fencing which will limit pedestrian crossings. These fences are required to ensure public safety.

Motorists

Preliminary works: The kerbside parking lane on the northern side of High Street from Lewisham Road North to Victoria Gardens will be closed from 12am Wednesday 9 October to 8pm Sunday 13 October. Access to and from High Street via Lewisham Road North will be closed for the duration of the works. Motorists are advised to access via Murray Street.

Major works: Due to the nature of the work, sections of High Street between St Kilda Road, Melbourne and Newry Street, Windsor will be closed to traffic from 8pm Sunday 13 October to 5am 27 October 2019. No vehicle access will be permitted to side streets along this section of High Street for the duration of works.

Noise and dust

Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews is unavoidable. In order to finish these works as quickly as possible, works will take place 24 hours a day and will generate high levels of noise. If work was kept to a ‘day time only’ schedule, the disruption to tram services, motoristsand the community would be substantially longer.

We apologise for the inconvenience this work causes and appreciate your understanding.

Local community

Access to shops and local infrastructure will remain unchanged during the works. Yarra Trams encourages you to allow some extra time when moving around the area while work is being done.

As this work is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Management Act 1996 (Vic), Yarra Trams will not compensate any third parties for any losses incurred during the project.

Local businesses

The businesses on High Street will remain open during the works. Please continue to support your local businesses during these essential infrastructure works.

Pedestrian access to these businesses will remain open at all times.

Parking will be removed along High Street and the following side streets to allow for two way access during the closure of:
