Bridge Road Tram Track Renewal

3 - 16 January 2021

About the project

Yarra Trams works with Public Transport Victoria (PTV) to carry out ongoing maintenance and renewal works across the network to ensure a safe and reliable tram network for future generations.

This section of tram track has been identified for urgent renewal and these works will ensure that this portion of the tram network will be made safe and reduce risk of derailments.

Tram track renewal works will deliver improved ride, comfort and safety for our passengers and a quieter infrastructure.

Major works

Works will include the replacement of tram tracks, poles and overhead wiring at the following locations:

– Bridge Road between Church Street and Burwood Road from 11pm Sunday 3 January to 5am Saturday 16 January 2021.

– Bridge Road and Church Street intersection from 2am Thursday 7 January to 5am Tuesday 12 January 2021.

Public transport changes

During major works, tram routes 48, 75 and 78 will be affected.

Motorists

Major works: Bridge Road between Church Street and Burwood Road will be closed to through traffic from 11pm Sunday 3 January to 5am Saturday 16 January 2021.

The intersection of Church Street and Bridge Road will be closed to through traffic from 2am Thursday 7 January to 5am Tuesday 12 January 2021.

No vehicle access will be permitted during this time.

Pedestrians

The work zone will be fenced off for safety, however footpaths will remain open around the work area to allow pedestrian access to businesses and residences.

Please note that there will be kerb to kerb fencing which will limit pedestrian crossings. These fences are required to ensure public safety.

During the closure of the Church Street intersection between 2am Thursday 7 January and 5am Tuesday 12 January, two additional crossing points will be located near Coppin Street and Burnley Street via a temporary pedestrian bridge. On reopening of the Church Street intersection,  one temporary pedestrian bridge will be located at a mid way point between Church Street and Hawthorn Bridge.

Crossing points will be facilitated where possible and may change depending on the construction activities taking place.

Noise and dust

Construction will occur 24-hours a day so that we can complete the works quickly and reduce the period of time that we inconvenience you. Noise and dust are unavoidable, but we will work to minimise this as much as possible and complete the noisiest works between 6am and 10pm.

We apologise for the inconvenience this work causes and appreciate your understanding.

Local community

Access to shops and local infrastructure will remain unchanged during the works. Yarra Trams encourages you to allow some extra time when moving around the area while work is being done.

Local businesses

The businesses located around the works area will remain open during the works. Please continue to support your local businesses during these essential infrastructure works.

Pedestrian access to these businesses will remain open at all times.

As this work is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Management Act 1996 (Vic), Yarra Trams will not compensate any third parties for any losses incurred during the project.

Local access and parking

There will be no local or driveway access to Bridge Road between Church Street and Burwood Road from 11pm Sunday 3 January to 5am Saturday 16 January 2021.

There will be no access to the intersection of Church Street and Bridge Road from 2am Thursday 7 January to 5am Tuesday 12 January 2021.

Street parking will also be temporarily removed throughout the major works. Residents are encouraged to park in surrounding streets prior to the works commencement date, noting local parking restrictions.

Parking and local access will be reinstated on completion of works.
