St Kilda Junction Substation Delivery and Crane Lift
Thursday 25 January 2018
Public Transport Victoria (PTV) in partnership with Yarra Trams will soon be installing a tram power substation at St Kilda Road, St Kilda Junction. These works are a part of upgrading our infrastructure to cater for the future demand on Melbourne's tram network.
What is planned?
A prefabricated substation building will be delivered to site and then lifted into place by a crane on the night of Sunday 4 February (into the early morning Monday 5 February).
Construction works preparing the site and foundations for the delivery of the prefabricated substation have been underway since early November 2017. (Click on this link for more information.)
This will occur from 11.30pm Sunday 4 February to 8am Monday 5 February 2018.
The following activities will take place:
- Set-up traffic management:12:00am
- Crane set-up:1:00am
- Building lift:3:00am
- Demobilise crane:4:30am
Motorists and pedestrians
Traffic management will be in place on St Kilda Road, Punt Road and Wellington Street involving lane closures as required. Delays are expected and it is recommended that motorists avoid the area during this period. To ensure the lift is carried out safely, traffic management will be implemented for both motorists and pedestrians with appropriate detours in place. Please heed warning signs and follow the direction of traffic controllers and workers. Tram services will not be affected.
Minimising impacts for the local community
Businesses and residents can expect to hear construction related noise. As works will be carried out during the night, flood lights will be used to ensure the safety of our workers. We are mindful of keeping noise to a minimum and respecting the needs of the local community. Please be aware these planned works are subject to adverse weather and may be delayed.
Keeping the local community informed
PTV and Yarra Trams are committed to keeping the local community informed of construction activity and progress, and will be providing regular updates. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this important upgrade work.
