Wednesday 4 April 2018
As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria are are repairing tram tracks at Maribyrnong Road and Raleigh Road and installing new automatic signal points at two intersections.
The tracks in the work zone are over 44 years old and areas need to be repaired. The repair will increase service reliability, safety and ride comfort for passengers. This new infrastructure will improve operational efficiency and reduce the chance of derailments.
Major work will occur in Ascot Vale and Maribyrnong at:
- Raleigh Road between Wests Road and Rosamond Road.
- Maribyrnong Road between Van Ness Avenue and Union Road.
Major works will commence at 12:01 am on Saturday 28 April and will continue 24 hours a day until 5am Tuesday 1 May.
Route 57 and 82 services will be affected.
For more details see the Route 57 and Route 82 network upgrade service changes.
Weekend road closures
Due to the nature of works, there will be two road closures on Maribyrnong Road from 12:01am Saturday 28 April until circa 5am Monday 30 April 2018.
- Between Van Ness Ave and Scotia Street / Epsom Road.
- Between Scotia Street / Epsom Road and Union Road.
Scotia Street / Epsom Road will be open for north and south traffic movement with no access to Maribyrnong Road.
Van Ness Avenue will be right in and left out only, with no east access to Maribyrnong Road.
If you live in the work area and would like to use your vehicle please park in side streets noting the local conditions before works commence. When safe to do so, assistance will be provided by traffic controllers to move cars out of the work zone.
Monday lane closures
To finish the project changes to road access will apply from circa 5am Monday 30 April until circa 5am Tuesday 1 May 2018:
- An east bound road closure on Maribyrnong Road will be in place between Epsom Road / Scotia Street and Union Road.
- Only one west bound lane will be open, no on-street parking.
The work zone will be fenced off for safety however footpaths will remain open around the work area to allow pedestrian access to businesses and residences located around the work zone.
Signage and fencing will clearly mark changes to footpath access during the project.
Noise and dust
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews will be unavoidable but we'll do all we can to keep this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6am and 10pm; however there may be a need to conduct noisy work outside these hours to ensure that the work is completed by 5am on Tuesday 1 May 2018.
We advise that this work is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).
