Stop lengthening works - Stop CC2 Spring St and Stop 119 La Trobe St

Thursday 22 September 2016

As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, the State Government is investing more than $1.1 billion into the manufacture and purchase of 70 new E-Class trams and associated infrastructure..

E-Class trams currently service Routes 11 and 96, and will soon be in operation on Route 86. To ensure E-Class trams are able to safely and efficiently operate on Route 86 and its associated diversions, Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and Yarra Trams are performing a number of enabling works.

What is planned?

To allow E-Class trams to fit within the safety zone areas of Stop CC2 (corner of Spring and Bourke Streets) and Stop 119 (corner of La Trobe and Spencer Streets), a number of minor civil works will take place. These include the removal of the existing concrete prow; the installation of bluestone kerbs; the installation of safety bollards; the extension of existing fencing; and the completion of new line marking.

Works will be carried out between 8:00am Monday 26 September and 5:00am Thursday 29 September 2016. Works will be carried out during the day and night throughout the work period except for peak traffic times.

Tram passengers

There will be no tram service disruptions during these works.

There will be some lane closures during these works. Traffic controllers and signage will be in place to direct motorists. Work areas will also be cordoned off with bollards to ensure the safety of pedestrians..

Noise and dust

Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews is unavoidable but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6am and 10pm.

We thank you for your patience and regret any inconvenience caused by this essential repair work.

We advise that it is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).

Accordingly Yarra Trams will not be compensating third parties for any losses incurred during the conduct of the work.
