Yarra Trams

Major Projects

major projects

With Melbourne's tram patronage at its highest since the 1950s, the Victorian Government has invested more than $800 million in new trams and modern infrastructure to revitalise the network to move more people effectively.

Yarra Trams undertakes major projects and maintenance works to maintain and improve Melbourne's tram network, one of the largest in the world. The benefits of these works include:

  • Easier and safer access to trams
  • Increased protection from road traffic
  • Improved passenger facilities and amenities
  • Increased passenger capacity on trams and at stops
  • Improved reliability and consistent journey times

In addition to planned work projects, Yarra Trams also conducts emergency repairs on tracks, power poles and other infrastructure. These works are often required to be carried out at very short notice. The impact on the surrounding community depends on the type of repair. Due to the urgent nature of emergency works, we are not always able to give advance warning.

We thank you for your patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused by our annual works program. These major works are essential for the continued safe and efficient operation of Melbourne's tram network.
