As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra
Trams and Public Transport Victoria are renewing tram tracks at the
intersection of Victoria and Church Streets in Richmond.
The curved tram tracks within the work-zone are about 40 years
old and require renewing. The renewed tracks will deliver a
better road surface for cyclists and tram passengers, produce less
tram noise due to potholes, broken railes and wheel squealing, and
will be quicker to repair in the future due to the use of new semi
Preliminary work will begin on Wednesday 5 April 2017 and will
involve the unloading and pre-welding of rails.
Major work will occur at the intersection of Victoria and Church
Streets in Richmond. Works will commence at 12:01 am on
Satuday 8 April and will continue 24 hours a day until 5 am on
Tuesday 11 April 2017.
Route 12, 78 and 109 tram services will be affected. For
more details closer to the time, please visit yarratrams.com.au/servicechanges.
Due to the nature of works, there will be a number of road
closures in place from 12:01 am on Saturday 8 April until 5 am on
Tuesday 11 April 2017:
Detours will be in place for the duration of the works.
Traffic controllers will be in place to direct traffic and help
facilitate local access where needed.
The work zone will be fenced off for safety, however, footpaths
will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses
located around the work zone.
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work
crews is unavoidable, but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep
this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6 am
and 10 pm, however, there may be a need to conduct noisy work
outside these hours to ensure that the work is completed by 5 am on
Tuesday 11 April 2017.
We advise that this work is being performed in accordance with
our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to
maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act
