As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra
Trams and Public Transport Victoria are renewing tram
infrastructure at the junction of Brunswick Road and Lygon
Melbourne's tram network requires more services in the future.
This renewal means power can be increased easily in the future for
trams on Lygon Street.
The construction will improve the reliability of the tram
Preliminary excavation work has started and will continue 7am to
5pm Monday to Friday until Friday 18 August 2017.
Major work will occur on Brunswick Road at the Lygon Street
junction. Works will commence at 12:01 am on Saturday 19 August and
will continue 24 hours a day until 5am Monday 21 August 2017.
Route 1 and 6 tram services will be
affected during major work over the weekend.
For preliminary work traffic on Brunswick Road will be managed.
During weekday work one lane will be closed between 119 Brunswick
Road and Lygon Street.
For major work road closures will be in place from 12:01am
Saturday 19 August until 5am Monday 21 August 2017.
Detours will be in place for the duration of the works.
Traffic controllers will direct traffic and help facilitate
local access where needed.
The work zone will be fenced off for safety, however, footpaths
will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses
located around the work zone.
Some pedestrian lights will be turned off during the works.
Traffic controllers will assist pedestrians when required.
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work
crews is unavoidable, but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep
this to a minimum.
The noisiest work will occur between 5am and 5pm, however, there
will be a need to conduct noisy work outside these hours to ensure
that the work and construction debris clean up in the work zone is
completed by 5am Monday 21 August 2017.
We advise that this work is being performed in accordance with
our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to
maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act
