New Green Depots for World Environment Day

Southbank Manager Alan Jones launches the new green depot

On Thursday 5 June Yarra Trams launched its two newest Green Depots to coincide with World Environment Day.

Essendon and Southbank depots will now be 'doing their bit' for the planet with a number of environmentally friendly innovations.

Essendon

  • Installation of LED lights, motion sensors throughout the depot
  • Raingarden to filter pollutants from stormwater
  • 2x 22,500 litre rainwater tanks to supply rainwater to toilets
  • Recycling hubs in admin and maintenance area to minimise waste to landfill (paper, general waste, organic material, toner cartridges, batteries)
  • Upgraded waterless urinals
  • Storm water drains labelled 

Essendon Depot raingarden

Southbank

  • 5KW solar system (20 panels)
  • 600W wind turbine
  • Solatube - replacement of fluorescent lights with natural lighting
  • Installation of 176 LED lights, 8 motion sensors
  • Raingarden to filter pollutants from stormwater
  • 2x 22,500 litre rainwater tanks to supply rainwater to toilets
  • Recycling hubs in admin and maintenance area, to minimise waste to landfill (paper, general waste, organic material, toner cartridges, batteries)
  • Upgraded waterless urinals
  • Storm water drains labelled

These are the fifth and six depots on the network to achieve 'green' status. Camberwell and Kew Depot will be upgraded at a later date.
