Capacity boost for tram passengers

Capacity on several routes will be boosted with a number of significant timetable changes from Sunday 27 July 2014.

The new timetable will deliver great benefits to our passengers in terms of simplifying the network, creating extra trips and capacity in inner-city growth areas and providing more reliable frequencies. It will add 471 trips to the network every week.

Which routes have changed?

Click on each route for a copy of the new route guide, effective Sunday 27 July 2014.

Route 1 - East Coburg to South Melbourne Beach

  • Every tram from South Melbourne Beach will complete the full route to East Coburg, rather than some trams terminating at the depot on Sydney Road.
  • This will create a simpler, more reliable service for passengers.

Route 11 - West Preston to Victoria Harbour Docklands

  • Route 11 will become a full-time route, travelling between West Preston and Victoria Harbour Docklands.
  • More larger capacity trams will operate along the route
  • Every 6 minutes on weekdays during peak.
  • Every 10 minutes during the day on weekdays and weekends.

Route 12 - St Kilda/Fitzroy Street to Victoria Gardens Richmond

  • Route 12 will become a new full-time route following Route 112 from St Kilda to St Vincent's Plaza then continuing to Victoria Street Richmond.
  • Direct access to Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre and Victoria Street restaurant precinct.
  • Route 12 has 1,382 trips per week delivering capacity for 90,000 extra passengers per week.
  • Over 700 services from South Melbourne to the city every day - Routes 1, 12 and 96.

Route 24 - North Balwyn to Etihad Stadium Docklands

  • We're simplifying the network by removing confusing routes that only run at certain times.
  • As a result, Route 24 will no longer operate.
  • Passengers for Docklands can take Route 48 direct to Victoria Harbour or change at Harbour Esplanade to Route 70 or Route 75.
  • Route 30 will continue to operate from St Vincent's Plaza via La Trobe Street.
  • Bus routes 200 and 207 also run to Lonsdale Street. These high frequency bus routes operate every 15 minutes during the peak and 20 minutes during off-peak, as well as every 30 minutes on weekends.
  • Additional low floor trams will be added to Route 48

Route 31 - Hoddle Street to Victoria Harbour Docklands

  • Route 31 will no longer operate.
  • Route 12 will combine with Routes 11, 48 and 109 to create a 1.5-minute frequency on Collins Street.
  • Passengers for Hoddle Street can take Route 12 to Victoria Gardens Richmond.
  • Passengers for Victoria Harbour Docklands can take Route 11.

Route 48 - North Balwyn to Victoria Harbour Docklands

  • More low-floor trams on Route 48.
  • Extra services between Docklands and the city with Route 11 becoming a full-time route.

Route 78 - North Richmond to Balaclava via Prahran

  • We're simplifying the network by removing confusing routes that only run at certain times.
  • Route 78 becomes a full-time service operating more than 18 hours a day.
  • As a result, Route 79 will no longer operate.
  • The Prahran destination has been changed to Balaclava to better reflect the location of the Brighton Road terminus.

Route 79 - Replaced by Route 78

  • Route 79 will no longer operate, as Route 78 becomes a full-time route.
  • Passengers for St Kilda change at Carlisle Street to Route 16 or Route 3a on weekdays.

Route 95 - Melbourne Museum to Etihad Stadium Docklands

  • We're simplifying the network by removing confusing routes that only run at certain times.
  • As a result, Route 95 will no longer operate.
  • The arrival of the first five E-Class trams means that there is already enough capacity on Routes 86 and 96 to meet demand on Bourke Street.

Route 109 - Box Hill to Port Melbourne via City

  • Double the number of services between the city and Victoria Street Richmond.
  • New direct service from Richmond to St Kilda via Collins Street with the new Route 12 (Victoria Gardens Richmond to St Kilda/Fitzroy Street).

Route 112 becomes Route 11 and Route 12

  • Please refer to Routes 11 and 12 above.

Route 59 - Airport West to City (Elizabeth Street)

Route 64 - Melbourne University to East Brighton

Route 67 - Melbourne University to Carnegie

Route 70 - Waterfront City Docklands to Wattle Park

Route 72 - Melbourne University to Camberwell

Route 75 - Etihad Stadium/Bourke Street Docklands to Vermont South

Route 82 - Moonee Ponds to Footscray

Route 86 - Bundoora RMIT Waterfront City Docklands

Route 96 - East Brunswick to St Kilda Beach
